    Legal Update

    The presentation will provide a legal update and discussion with topics to include:
    • Recently enacted laws in New Jersey, such as
       * the Workplace Democracy Enhancement Act,
       * the Wage Theft Act,
       * the New Jersey Sick Leave Act,
       * the Equal Pay Act;
    • Recent and upcoming changes to existing laws, such as
       * the New Jersey Family Leave Act,
       * the New Jersey Family Leave Insurance Law,
       * New Jersey minimum wage laws; and
       * the recent United States Supreme Court decision of Janus v. AFSCME and its impact on public sector unions.

    Vanessa E. James, Esquire routinely litigates matters in State and Federal Courts in the areas of Police and Professional Liability, Employment Law, Employment Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, Wrongful Discharge, Civil Rights, and Commercial Litigation.


    Ms. James also provides consultation and investigative services to both public and private entities on employment matters and reviews and recommends changes to policies and procedures to comply with all applicable laws, rules and regulations.


    Vanessa E. James, Esquire, along with her partners, Attorney Michael Barker, and Attorney Todd Gelfand, have created and taught a series of courses, at the Center for Public Safety and Security, The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, on effective risk management techniques for law enforcement executives dealing with internal complaints, citizen complaints, claims, and civil litigation.


    Education: Wake Forest University School of Law, Winston Salem, NC, 2005 J.D.; Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, 2001 BA in Political Science, summa cum laude.
